Range Hoods FAQs

Range hoods do not necessarily need to be vented outside. There are two main types of range hoods: vented and ductless. While vented hoods direct air out of the house through ductwork, ductless hoods filter and recirculate air back into the kitchen. So, depending on your specific preferences and kitchen setup, a range hood installation can be either vented outside or re-circulated inside.

A range hood and a vent hood essentially perform the same function: they remove smoke, grease, heat, and odors from the space over your cooking area. The primary difference lies in their setup. A range hood uses a forced-air fan to push air out of the system, while a vent hood relies on a pull-down fan to draw air into the system.

A good CFM (Cubic Feet per Minute) for a range hood largely depends on the size of your kitchen and amount of cooking. For general cooking, a range hood with a CFM between 200 and 300 is typically sufficient. However, if you do a lot of heavy cooking, a CFM of 350-800 could be more suitable to effectively remove heat, steam, and odors.

The purpose of a range hood is to ventilate your kitchen, removing unwanted smoke, odors, heat, and steam produced during cooking. This appliance captures and exhausts these byproducts to the outdoors through a vent, improving indoor air quality. Its secondary function is to provide additional lighting to your cooking area.

The most effective range hood is highly dependent on your specific needs and kitchen layout. Generally, a range hood with high CFM (Cubic Feet Per Minute) rating, effective filtration system, and appropriate size fitting the dimensions of your stove top is considered effective.
